MEC to probe Mayor impasse at Nquthu Council
The MEC has ordered the Council t reconvene to settle the impasse

The Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Sipho Hlomuka has called upon the Speaker of the Nquthu Local Municipality to ensure that ‘good governance prevails’ at the municipality following reports that two councillors are claiming the mayoral chain.
Reports received by the department indicate that the Nquthu council convened an illegal seating on March 26 where it elected a Mayor to replace incumbent, Mayor S Kunene.
According to a statement received from Nonala Ndlovu, COGTA liaison officer, the seating took place in defiance of the Directions issued by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs concerning the response to Covid-19, regarding the holding of meetings.
“It is very unfortunate that a council defied the regulations as set out by the national minister and as a department, we will not allow a situation where the rule of law is thrown out the door by a few,”said MEC Hlomuka.
“We have instructed the council to follow the directions as set out by the minister, as a department we will not hesitate to hold all the councillors who participated in the illegal seating personally responsible should we find that the municipality has accrued unnecessary expenditure as a result of the decisions that were taken at this illegal seating.
“We have thus directed the Speaker to convene a Council meeting in line with the new Directions of the Minister dated May 6 , to elect the Mayor, without delay,” the MEC said.
