Motorist ‘fined’ R3000 for picking up hitchhikers

He was confronted by men who had pulled up to him in a taxi

A motorist has reported that he was “scared out of his wits” when he was threatened with violence after stopping to give two people a lift along the Dundee / Vryheid road on Friday morning.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said he was travelling to Nquthu in a company car when he stopped to pick up two hitchhikers.

While doing so, he was confronted by men who had pulled up to him in a taxi, threatening that he should not be giving people lifts, as he ”is not a taxi”.

“They were very threatening and wanted to take away my car keys. It is a company vehicle, so I was very worried about my job too.”

He said the men then forced him to drive back to town and withdraw R3000 from the Capitec ATM as a ‘fine’.

“I reported this to the SAPS, but they told me I should go to the taxi association to complain, so I am not really sure what to do. I just want to warn other motorists to be vigilant when stopping to pick up hikers – rather don’t.”
Dundee SAPS reported no knowledge of the incident.
