Police spokesperson Captain Bongani Nyathi said it is alleged that the woman was drinking alcohol with friends at the tuck shop.

When she went outside to use the toilet, witnesses claim a male followed her.

“There was an argument outside and the deceased’s sister went to check on her. She found her lying on the gravel road, and there were blood stains. The sister then noticed the tuck shop owner walking in the opposite direction towards the shop,” explained Captain Nyathi.

After taking a statement from the deceased’s sister, a 35-year-old man was arrested and detained at Estcourt police station until his bail application is heard in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court.

“There are unconfirmed allegations that the suspect gave the deceased liquor with the intention of having sex with her,” commented Captain Nyathi.
