JUST IN: Expect more water disruptions as labour dispute intensifies

Disruptions in water provision, including sanitation services are expected

The labour dispute between uThukela District Municipality management and its staff intensified today after unions said staff would not return to work until all their grievances have been resolved.

The district municipality says this decision will cause disruptions in water provision, including sanitation services.

“The municipality fully understands that the unfortunate strike is taking place during the worst period where the novel coronavirus is on a surge. We call upon all residents to use water sparingly and bear with us as we are trying our utmost best to manage the situation,” said communication manager Jabulani Mkhonza.

The strike by workers intensified last Tuesday and widespread water cuts were experienced in Estcourt and surrounding areas after workers downed tools.

“The municipality has put in place immediate temporary measures to ensure that water production processes and supply resumes earliest, while it attempts to resolve the labour impasse with the striking workers. There is going to be another meeting between the management and union representatives tomorrow,” added Mr Mkhonza.
