uThukela workers have returned to work after being on a strike that started last week Tuesday (July 21). The workers “downed tools” because they said they didn’t have adequate personal protective equipment (PPE).
uThukela communications manager Jabulani Mkhonza has released a statement confirming that the workers are now back at work. The statement reads as follows, “uThukela District Municipality wishes to inform the public that the majority of the municipality’s workforce has returned to work and has withdrawn from the ongoing municipal workers’ strike which started last week Tuesday.”
According to Mkhonza, service delivery has returned to normal and water provision has been restored in residential and industrial areas. “We have received no cases of intimidation, as workers resumed their duties this morning (July 30). Our employees are working hard to ensure that they cover the backlogs, including sewer overflow that occurred due to the strike. Water supply is back to normal in most parts of the district.”
Operations teams are checking for possible bursts, as well as other water and sewer infrastructure challenges.
“We assume that all is in order, except for burst pipes that were reported or identified, but our technical team is attending to the matter,” concluded Mkhonza.
