DUNDEE KZN: The firework ‘bang’ can affect your baby

A loud bang of fireworks is almost synonymous with new year celebrations as Dundee/Glencoe resident know only too well.

This explosion of colours are however regulated by bylaws under the Explosives Act, 1956. 

The Act states that fireworks may not be set off in any public place such as parks, on the pavement or the streets.

Sound pressure is generally experienced the most by infants and therefore, they should not be exposed to fireworks without protection. Paediatrician, Patrick Mabowa says it is okay for babies to see fireworks but that one should be best prepared for any reaction.

“Some babies may be amused by and love the lights and colours, while others may be frightened by the loud noises and crowds of people. It is a good idea to have an escape plan in case your baby has the latter reaction. I would not take children close to any place where loud fireworks takes place,” he said.

Mabowa added that loud fireworks will hurt babies’ ears.

“Some babies love fireworks, especially the colourful ones, but you do not want to get too close to them. There is however no need to keep your baby away entirely, just make sure that you keep your distance.

Most importantly, you do not want to stay away from the fun while everyone else enjoys the fireworks,” he added. In conclusion, Mabowa advised parents concerned with their baby’s hearing to join in on the fun, but cover their ears with a hat, blanket or baby earmuffs when heading outside.
