KZN VRYHEID: Municipal Manager responds to lack of refuse removal

Community members dumped their refuse bags at the AbaQulusi Local Municipality this morning (January 7) in objection to their refuse not being collected for a few days and at some residential areas for a couple of weeks.
Municipal Manager, Bonga Ntanzi responded with the following:
“We are noting the recent challenge on refuse removal and we are currently sorting out the issue, things should get back to normal by Monday, (January 11) as a new contractor has been appointed.
The previous contractor’s contract ended on December 31, 2020 and that has caused a huge backlog on the refuse removal. We have however, appointed a new contractor on January 1 who has already started collecting refuse and will be going to all the areas that have not yet had refuse collected – areas like town, industrial, Bhekuzulu Location and Lakeside. Currently the pickup trucks are already collecting. This should be completed by tomorrow and things will be back to normal by Monday.
In our quest to ensure we improve on our service delivery mandate, we have appointed HOD and Manager responsible for waste collection. We believe these appointments of the HOD and Manager will address all the shortfalls we have been having and ensure that refuse is collected on time to avoid further backlog.
Additionally, we have appointed another contractor who will ensure the smooth running of the landfill and will commence with work as from today. We would like to express our sincere apologies to the community for the inconvenience and request cooperation from the citizens. Things are gradually moving back to normal. We do apologize immensely”, said Municipal Manager, Bonga Ntanzi.
