NEWCASTLE KZN: Police urge residents to be extra vigilant and avoid becoming a statistic
Walk with confidence and at a good, steady pace.
Despite Covid-19 and all its challenges, opportunistic criminals are still out in full force, preying on innocent victims going about their daily tasks.
Lizzy Arumugam of Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications said now, more than ever, individual safety needs to become a priority.
In an effort to assist the community, Newcastle Police has issued the following safety tips to help residents avoid becoming victims:
- Always be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. If you feel like you’re in an unsafe area, then you most probably are
- Know where you are going and choose the safest way to get there, particularly when moving around at night
- If you are going for a run or walk, do so in a well-travelled and well-lit area and avoid taking short cuts through alleys and parking lots.
- Have a plan of action in mind and decide where you are going and what you would do in case you find yourself in a dangerous situation
- Know where the closest police station is located and how to contact the police in case of an emergency
- Familiarise yourself with the establishments in that area so you can seek help in case you find yourself in danger
- Carry a whistle with you; the loud noise will scare off possible attackers and alert the people around you – Be extra cautious when jogging or cycling; vary your route, go with a friend and avoid isolated areas
- Do not wear earphones as this can distract you from being aware of your surroundings
- Keep purses and wallets tucked between your arms and body. Do not walk around with too many bags and parcels, as this makes you appear defenceless
- Carry only what you need when walking around and avoid carrying large amounts of cash or wearing flashy jewellery.
- Lastly, practise extreme caution when withdrawing cash at an ATM. Try to use ATMs specifically located inside stores, as they are usually the safest. Â
