NEWCASTLE KZN: Local police clamp down on mask-less residents

The four suspects have made an appearance in court.

Four suspects were taken into custody after blatantly flouting national Covid-19 regulations.

This is according to Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, who confirmed the four accused have all made an appearance in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court.

“The four suspects were arrested for failing to wear a mask in public. The arrests were made while members of the Osizweni Crime Prevention unit were performing routine patrols in the Osizweni policing area,” confirmed Arumugam.

She added that the patrols were part of an ongoing focus on various crimes in the area.

“On Monday afternoon (March 8), SAPS members were patrolling the KwaNodlela Tavern Area in Section F, Osizweni when they noticed the suspects breaking the law. The accused are between the ages of 26 and 29 and have been charged for contravening the Disaster Management Act of 2020,” concluded Arumugam.
