DUNDEE KZN: Eskom – What a load of sh#%

Imagine being stuck there, alone in the dark, fumbling for loo paper

The Dark Ages traditionally refers to the Early Middle Ages or Middle Ages, and the term is used to describe a time lacking cultural achievements.

Now, thanks to Eskom, the Dark Ages could refer to any point in time in which load-shedding is implemented. Now, I know what you’re thinking: ‘What a load of sh#%!’ The word is shed, not the word you were thinking of.

Load-shedding is never nice, but depending on what time it strikes, it can be a lot worse. When load-shedding strikes in the early hours of the morning, while you’re asleep in your bed, then it’s okay. But if it strikes before or during that crunch soccer game, well now, that is frustrating.

Load-shedding can really be a load of k@k if you’re on the loo in the middle of the night, trying to have a k@k and forget to carry your phone.

Imagine being stuck there, alone in the dark, fumbling for loo paper. A k@k thought, right? But that’s what load-shedding is! However, it isn’t the only pooey thing we have in South Africa right now.

There are constant complaints of potholes, lack of water, unruly grass, livestock wandering the streets, and litterbugs, to name but a few. Yes – service delivery, or actually the lack thereof, is sh…. (you know the rest of the letters) to say the least.

Year after year, promise after promise, election after election – nothing gets done. Just looking around your street, or neighbourhood, and there are numerous cases of service delivery that, well, aren’t delivered. Services that we, the ratepayer, don’t get because of who knows what. That’s not to say that things aren’t done.

There are many hardworking men and women who strive to ensure that their communities have services; and we applaud them for that. However, there are the fat cats who sit at the top and watch as the towns crumble around them.

So how do we stop this? Well, maybe load-shedding has the answer. Eskom takes away our power, supposedly to save the country from further trouble in the future. So maybe we need to take away the power from corrupt officials who are only in office to enrich themselves. If we take away their power, we can save ourselves in the long-run as well.

With local government elections coming up, think before you vote and ensure that we aren’t in the dark for years to come.
