NEWCASTLE KZN: Weekend operation puts eight suspects behind bars
Police confiscated drugs to the amount of approximately R11 000.
The combined force of Osizweni Crime Prevention, detectives from Osizweni SAPS and the Newcastle Cluster Task Team during an intelligence driven operation yielded positive results.
According to Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, the operation was conducted in the Osizweni policing area from Friday, April 16 to Sunday, April 18.
“The operation was focused on drug-related crimes as well as several other crimes within the vicinity,” confirmed Arumugam.
On April 16, she said, law enforcement officials detained one suspect at a home in Section C and confiscated two mandrax tablets.
“On the Saturday (April 17), police arrested another suspect after finding four full mandrax tablets and one half mandrax tablet in his possession,” she said.
That same day, another two offenders were taken into custody after being found in possession of 10 full mandrax tablets in Section A.
“Also in Section A, one suspect was arrested at his home after he was caught with 13 small packets of heroin in his possession. That same afternoon, another suspect was caught with nine small packets of heroin.”
On Sunday (April 18) police apprehended a suspect in Section A who was found in possession of a black Z88 9mm pistol firearm and a magazine.
“Police then arrested one person in Mndozo after seizing four small packets of heroin and one and a half tablets of mandrax.”
Arumugam confirmed that the street value of the drugs confiscated was approximately R11 000.
“The suspects detained range in age from 20 to 35 years old and they have all appeared in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court,” she said.
In addition, a 22-year-old suspect has been charged with unlawful weapon possession and has since appeared in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court.
Arumugam congratulated the law enforcement officials involved for their dedication to fighting crime.
