NEWCASTLE KZN: Five arrested for drug crimes and flouting Covid-19 regulations

All suspects are due to appear in court soon.

With the assistance of Osizweni Crime Prevention participants, an Intelligence Driven Operation was conducted on May 13 in the Osizweni policing area focusing on drug related cases.

According to Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, law enforcement members in Section A detained one suspect for possession of hard narcotics (powder drugs).

“Five packages wrapped in clear plastic, as well as R130, were confiscated from the defendant. The drugs confiscated had a street value of approximately R800,” she confirmed.

Following that, members in Section A and detained four more suspects during routine patrols, for breaching Level (1) of the Disaster Management Act of 2020 by failing to wear a face mask.

“It was during these patrols, which continued in the Manzana area, that police arrested one of the suspects for contravening Covid-19 regulations by using, operating or performing any kind of public transportation without wearing a face mask,” explained Arumugam.

“The operation was a success as four suspects aged 23 to 31, were arrested for violating the Disaster Management Act of 2021 and will appear at the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court soon,” she concluded.

Furthermore, the 29-year-old suspect has already appeared in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court for being in possession of narcotics.
