DUNDEE KZN: DHS congratulates Mr Botha on completing his second Ironman
The art class of 2021 began their excursion to Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg on the icy morning
Although all contact sport has been suspended, one of DHS’s staff members has been training hard for the ultimate individual triathlon. Imagine a 4am training session, followed by a day of teaching to ensure that his students get optimal attention in class and then another two hour-long training sessions in the afternoon. This has been Mr Botha’s life for the last six months.
On Sunday, June 6, it all came to a climax, with Mr Botha completing the 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km run in his second Ironman 70.3 in Durban in a time of 6:05.36. Not only was he able to complete the gruelling race, but he managed to finish 79th in his age category and 247th overall. Well done for being such a great example to many!
Art tour
The art class of 2021 began their excursion to Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg on the icy morning of June 4, as they climbed onto the Dundee High bus all wrapped in blankets and filled with excitement. On arrival, they were welcomed by a large historical brick building surrounded by sculptures and carefully curated artworks. With Covid-19 regulations closely observed, the eager students gathered in the opening hall, where they were greeted and given a brief insight on what the gallery had in store for them.
There was a display of a matric 2021 exhibition on the bottom floor, where the class was able to view their fellow peers’ artwork and gain inspiration for their own. There was also an exhibition done by art teachers, where they were able to see sculptures, painting and many more great masterpieces. After a while, they wandered up to the top floor, which contained the permanent art features of the gallery.
Mrs Carter took them to view the ‘Stripped, Oh Yes Girl’ by Jane Alexander, which is one of their current studies in class. The sculpture was magnificent and eye-opening with regards to today’s problem of gender standards that women must meet. They viewed many great paintings and sculptures, which included a sketch from Pablo Picasso and the famous sculpture of ‘Christ playing football’ by Jackson Hlungwani. The learners expressed their gratitude to Mrs Carter for organising this lovely adventure and for giving them the opportunity to witness such a great gallery with a rich collection of old and new.
