NEWCASTLE KZN: Dam levels dip as we head deeper into winter

The public is urged to find creative ways to reuse water.

Dam levels within KwaZulu-Natal have taken yet another minimal dip, from last week’s 73.3% to 73%, according to the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).

Spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau said the decline was expected as a result of the ‘persisting unpredictable weather patterns’.

“As much as we are seeing this minimal decline, it is comforting to note that the province’s main water supply system (Umgeni) is above average at 84.9%,” he confirmed.

Here are your dam levels for this week:

Midmar Dam – 99.2%

Nagle Dam – 88.7%

Albert Falls – 55.1%

Inanda Dam – 97.9%

Bivane Dam – 97.9%

Hluhluwe Dam – 95.8%

Hazelmere Dam – 51.2%

Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam – 79.1%

Zaaihoek Dam – 78.6%

Mearns Dam – 67.5%

Craigie Burn Dam – 100.6%

Wagendrift Dam – 100.6%

Klipfontein Dam – 98.5%

Ratau continued by reiterating the department’s commitment to rolling out bulk water projects in the province, such as the raising of the Hazelmere Dam wall, which is currently underway.

As the implementation of such projects continued in earnest, he added, DWS has called on residents to play an active role by using water sparingly and reporting structure vandalism.

“We urge the public to please not vandalise our already ailing infrastructure, report such acts to local authorities and find creative ways of reusing water, such as using laundry water to clean or flush the toilet,” he concluded.
