DUNDEE KZN: Help the SPCA break the chains this month

Help the SPCA this month by supporting the Break The Chains Campaign

June is Break The Chains month and the Dundee SPCA are calling on you to help them make a difference.

The Break The Chains Campaign seeks to replace makeshift collars (often made up of wires and chains) with new or good secondhand leashes and collars.

“This is such an important initiative! Most people see chaining their animal’s, dog’s more specifically, as a norm. In most cases the chain used as a collar or leash is so heavy, tight and consists of sharp pieces of wire, it causes harm and discomfort to animal,” said the SPCA’s Operations Manager, Stephan Joubert.

“Animal’s also have rights that are written into and protected by law. The harm and discomfort some or most of this chains inflict on the animal also violates some of the 5 freedoms that every animal should enjoy. All animals should enjoy freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury and disease, freedom from fear and distress, and freedom to express normal behavior. So with this initiative we aim to replace chains used as collars and leashes with appropriate and approved collars and leashes. It’s also an educational experience for most animal owners that we do come across using the chain method, as it’s seen as a norm by them.

“With the generous help from local schools and members of the public, we’ve received some donated collars and leashes to help us break the chains ‘literally’ and replace them with the donated items. Although we as Dundee SPCA take a lead role in this campaign, it’s up to each and every member of the community to play their part in identifying problems and change the life of an animal in their care. Together we are united in cause to be a voice for the voiceless,” Stephan added.

You can help the SPCA by donating collars or leashes during this month. The items can be dropped off at The Alley Cat, The Northern Natal Courier, The Dundee SPCA or Mr Biltong.
