NEWCASTLE KZN: Municipality warns of ‘illegal sales’ of municipal land
It is essential to check with the municipality about any land you wish to purchase.
The Newcastle Municipality has distanced itself from any ‘unknown tribal authority’ practising the illegal and fraudulent activity of selling municipal and private land in Madadeni, Osizweni, Charlestown and other areas in Newcastle.
According to municipal Head of Communications, Mlungisi Khumalo, the municipality is warning the community to be aware of ‘criminal activity’ based on the illegal sale of land and/or property by certain people, claiming to be part of an unknown tribal authority.
“Any tribal authority that is selling land and/or property must be recognised and verified by the Provincial Department of Co-operative Governance (CoGTA) and the Ingonyama Trust,” explained Khumalo.
He added that it is essential to check with the municipality about any land you wish to purchase, as available municipal land or sites for sale are usually out on bid and are advertised in the local newspapers and the municipal website.
“The provisions of section 14 (b) of the Municipal Finance Management Act 2003 (Act No 56 of 2003) are followed. The municipality urges all victims and residents to report any illegal selling or land and/or property to the SAPS and to com forward and visit the municipal offices on 37 Murchison Street, 4th Floor, at the Department of Development Planning and Human Settlements,” said Khumalo.
He concluded by revealing the announcement came after the Office of the Speaker had been ‘inundated with numerous calls’ from people who claimed they had been duped into buying land which did not belong to the seller.
