VRYHEID KZN: Handcrafts certificates for ‘oldies’

“We are still offering a three-month course, but we are on the journey to give a one-year full course to our students. If there is anyone who would like to join, they can contact 073 169 4570.

It was a day filled with joy for the old people who received their handcraft certificates last week Monday at King Zwelithini Hall. They gathered in the hall with their special outfits, as it was their big day. They were warmly welcomed by Mama Coka. Mama Madi outlined the purpose of the day, saying, “We are here today to hand out certificates for computer literacy and beadwork to the people who have worked hard and were consistent with their work. We are here to celebrate them. We operate under an NPO called Yebozululand, under the Roman Catholic Church, that’s based in Eshowe and has been supporting us when it comes to talents.”

Mama Madi mentioned that in 2018, they started doing handwork at Isizuzulu, carrying on in 2019, and in 2020 they were affected by Covid-19, but they are still continuing with their work. She also mentioned that they have been running for about three to four years now with their project. She concluded by saying that everybody should ‘dust themselves off’ and create something for themselves, as they can see there are very few job opportunities in this country at the moment. People at home should take up handcrafts like beadwork and sewing. She said she also believes in working in groups, as it makes work easier and faster. She says that if there is someone who is measuring the material, another person can cut it and someone else can sew. She encouraged people at home to join groups and also form groups, and start to work.
