NEWCASTLE KZN: Deputy Mayor spreads warmth at children’s home

The initiative aimed to combat the icy chill of winter, especially for those who 'do not have the basic luxury of a blanket'.

The Newcastle Municipality’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Reuben Molelekoa formed part of an initiative to donate blankets to Morester Children’s Home this week.

In partnership with Shumba Inc, the initiative was meant to combat the icy chill of winter, especially for those who ‘do not have the basic luxury of a blanket’, according to Mlungisi Khumalo, Head of Communications for the municipality.

“It is for this reason that Shumba Inc took the initiative to donated 50 warm and comfortable blankets to the children of Morester,” explained Khumalo.

A representative of the company said its mission was to ensure the children of the home were kept warm this winter.

“This is our way of making sure our communities are well taken care of this winter and during this global pandemic. We promise this will not be the last time we come to Morester – we will definitely be back to assist where needed,” said a representative from the company.

During the handover, Cllr Molelekoa explained the donation came at the right time; just as the country anticipates a harsher third wave of Covid-19.

“The Covid-19 pandemic is still with us and the risk of getting sick is higher now since it is winter. These blankets will help minimise risks for the young ones in terms of catching the winter flu and colds. Everyone deserves to have a warm winter, which is why even the smallest contribution goes a long way,” said Cllr Molelekoa.

He concluded by thanking the private sector for the donation:

“Indeed, blessed is the hand that gives…”
