DUNDEE KZN: Eerie calm descends after a night of battles

There has been wide spread praise for the SAPS officials, security officers and volunteers who risked their lives throughout the night to protect lives and property.

An eerie calm has descended on Endumeni this morning after a night of running battles between SAPS, security officials and volunteers and groups of people who attempted to access the central business district of Dundee – possibly in a bid to break into shops.

The hotspot was the Colley Street Bridge where rubber bullets were fired as the battle intensified. A strong wind added to the almost ghostly spectacle. The majority of the groups were held back.  Tensions were running high as there was continuous reports of plans to loot shops in Dundee and Glencoe.

There were also reports of vehicles being stones in the Watt Road area. In Glencoe, shopkeepers, security officials and volunteers kept watch at the Glencoe Spar Centre to keep any would-be looters at bay.

There has been wide spread praise for the SAPS officials, private security officers and volunteers who risked their lives throughout the night to protect lives and property. Many responded to the call to assist and carry out patrols and perform active duty throughout the night. Without them, the SAPS would have not coped.

Roads are mainly open this morning but motorists are urged to only travel if absolute necessary as the situation can change at moment.  The Nquthu road is closed after the Buffalo River bridge motorists said this morning.

Both Charlies Spar and Glencoe Spar are currently open. The Dundee Boulevard Centre remains closed as are several petrol stations.

Most smaller businesses are also closed.

There was widespread looting in Pomeroy with many shops hit. SAPS fired rubber bullets to keep looters at bay.
