NEWCASTLE KZN: Local dam levels continue to decline amid cold weather
Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam – 75.8%, showing a decrease from last week’s 77.3%
A cold front, expected to sweep across KwaZulu-Natal this week, is likely to continue the province’s downward trend in dam levels.
Reservoir storage has dropped weekly this winter, with only a few dams showing improvement.
According to the most recent reservoirs report by the Department of Water and Sanitation, dam levels in KZN fell significantly this week compared to last week.
Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam decreased from 77,3% capacity to 75.8%.
Other figures are as follows:
Mearns Dam – 91.2%
Nagle Dam – 82.8%
Albert Falls Dam – 54.1%
Woodstock Dam – 86.6%
Klipfontein Dam – 92.3%
Hluhluwe Dam – 91.5%
Craigieburn Dam – 99.8%
Zaaihoek Dam – 78.4%
Spring Grove Dam – 90.7%
Goedertrouw Dam – 72.9%
Bivane Dam – 93.3%
Pongolapoort Dam – 57.4%
“The Umgeni Water Supply System has declined from 78.3% last week to 77.5%. This is a significant jump from last year’s 71.2% during the same period,” said officials from the department.”
Officials have urged residents to continue using water sparingly, while the department works ‘around the clock’ to implement bulk water projects through its entities and several municipalities across the province.
Residents can report water leaks to local authorities or call 080 020 0200.
