DUNDEE KZN: Local dancers look forward to national honours

This is a huge chance for contestants to represent their country at the World Championships held in Los Angeles.

Dundee’s own Hayley Wentzel, Skylar Davies and Kate-Lynn Labuschagne will fly the town’s flag high when they compete as part of Team KZN in the South African Championships of Performing Arts. The trio recently qualified for the team at the provincial auditions.

The competition (South African Championships) is a prestigious performing arts contest that has been running for the past 24 years and is open to competitors aged five and older. Contestants compete in a number of styles within different events. The events are Acting, Vocals, Dance, Variety Arts, Instruments and Modelling. Skylar, Kate-Lynn and Hayley will now compete in the national competition, which is held annually in Rustenberg over a 10-day period.

All 11 provinces are represented by approximately 3000 contestants who compete for medals, overall awards and their place in Team South Africa. This is a huge chance for contestants to represent their country at the World Championships held in Los Angeles. There is also an opportunity to win the Junior or Senior Grand Champion award, which is a fully-paid trip to the World Championships.

KZN has been very successful over the years at the World Championships, and have had four Grand Champion winners since 2014 (three in vocals and one in dance). KZN has a high success rate and has brought home many medals and overall awards, not to mention winning the Provincial Trophy for Spirit on many occasions.

“I am really impressed with how the girls handled the situation (Covid-19, etc.). We, as dancers, have so much endurance and perseverance, because that is what I teach my dancers. They did an outstanding job on stage and I am incredibly proud of each and every one of them,” said Marina de Beer from Stepping Out Dance Academy.
