Newcastle KZN: SANBS honours women who give life
“The SANBS understands the extent to which transfusions can change the lives of women and their family members, given that nearly 28 per cent of blood issued is used in childbirth and gynaecological emergencies,” said Dr Karin van den Berg, SANBS Medical Director.

Join the Newcastle SANBS team on Monday, August 9, and donate a unit of blood in honour of our nation’s women, past and present, who cement themselves and make our country a better place.
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is proud to recognise, thank, and celebrate women on behalf of the rest of South Africa, particularly those who comprise our national blood donor base.
According to them, women account for more than 45 per cent of our national donor base, and blood transfusions have saved many women’s lives.
“The SANBS understands the extent to which transfusions can change the lives of women and their family members, given that nearly 28 per cent of blood issued is used in childbirth and gynaecological emergencies,” said Dr Karin van den Berg, SANBS Medical Director.
“We are deeply committed to women, whose contributions to the country’s blood supply are critical. They are the ideal protagonists for blood donation because they are caregivers, nurturers, and mentors, and they send the message that donating blood is the right thing to do. “Let us give back to the mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and sisters who were instrumental in our upbringing by donating blood,” van den Berg pleaded.
One blood donation can save up to three lives.
This is due to the fact that a unit of blood is divided into three components: red cells, platelets, and plasma.
Red blood cells are typically used to replace blood volume in people who have lost a lot of blood, such as in a car accident or childbirth, plasma in people who have blood disorders, such as haemophilia, and platelets in cancer patients whose platelets have been destroyed by chemotherapy.
