Ladysmith KZN: Communities receive healthcare services closer to home

The programme offers a variety of services on-site at mobile clinics

The community of Ekuvukeni, under Alfred Duma Local Municipality, has expressed immense gratitude after receiving much-needed primary healthcare services closer to home.

Scores of people from local communities gathered at the Sondoda Sports Ground on Tuesday (October 19) to receive immediate assistance for their health concerns, as part of the KwaZulu-Natal Health Department’s programme called ‘Isibhedlela Kubantu’.

MEC for Health Ms Nomgagugu Simelane-Zulu was accompanied by uThukela District Deputy Mayor Cllr NW Mchunu.

The Isibhedlela Kubantu community outreach programme provides a number of basic healthcare services undertaken by doctors and nurses who are readily available to help patients.

“I wish to explain that we took a decision as the government in KwaZulu-Natal, under the leadership of Premier Sihle Zikalala, to change people’s lives via mobile health services,” said MEC Simelane-Zulu.

The programme provides: assistance for minor ailments; dental health; optometrist services; rehabilitation; occupational health; Covid-19 screening, testing and vaccination; on-site male circumcision; blood pressure and diabetes screening and assistance; HIV testing; cancer screening and testing; TB screening and testing; medical emergency services; a child immunisation programme; vitamin A and other supplements for children; a pharmacy programme offering various medications; physiotherapy; and radiology services.

The programme also offers counselling / consultation through professional social workers, pregnancy testing and family planning.

ARVs are prescribed on-site for immediate consumption if a person has been diagnosed with HIV.
