VRYHEID KZN: Teaching learners how to plant seeds

“If you feed a child, you feed the whole community, and I am very happy and excited about the project taking place."

A garden handover was conducted at Besterspruit Primary School last week Wednesday, when learners were shown how to start a garden (planting of seeds).

Some of the learners gathered in the school hall, where Miss Mahaye gave them a demonstration on what they were going to do outside. She also taught them that a garden requires one to use water, and that it is important to save water when gardening.

The principal of the school, SV Mbuli, mentioned that this kind of project goes a long way, not only for the school but for the community as a whole. He also stated that the school has a nutrition project, so this ‘garden activity’ will help a lot, “If you feed a child, you feed the whole community, and I am very happy and excited about the project taking place.” He sent out a big thank you to the ABSA representatives for choosing their school to implement such a project.

“The long-term challenge of inequality and poverty in South Africa has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, which means that the majority of our people do not have the luxury of choice when it comes to their nutritional needs. One way to increase the number of sustainable diets is to enable communities to become more resilient and self-sufficient by growing locally grown, sustainable food,” said Norman Venketiah (ABSA Head of Coverage, Relationship Banking, KwaZulu-Natal).
