ESTCOURT KZN: Two arrested after truck hijacking
The ‘getaway’ vehicle was recovered, as well as the truck, along with its cargo
An overnight stopover in Winterton on January 23 proved to be a bad decision for a truck driver. The driver, who (according to police) is a foreign national, was asleep in his truck in the central business district (CBD) when he was accosted by three armed men at about 22:00.
“They tied up the driver and drove the truck towards the N3 highway. A short while later, the vehicle was stopped and the driver was left at the side of the road. The vehicle continued in the direction of the N3,” explained police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan.
Fortunately, a farmer came to the stranded driver’s aid and immediately called the police.
“Winterton police officers acted swiftly and established that the truck was travelling towards Mooi River. They gave chase and on spotting the vehicle, they noticed that it was being escorted by a light motor vehicle. “When the suspects in the truck noticed the police vehicle following, they quickly stopped and got into the light motor vehicle. “When the officers pounced on them, they ran into the bush, while shooting at police. The officers retaliated, resulting in a suspect sustaining a gunshot wound and another being arrested. The others managed to evade police,” Khan explained.

The injured suspect has been admitted to hospital and is being guarded by police. The uninjured suspect appeared in the Winterton Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
