VRYHEID KZN: Youth clean blocked drains in Bhekuzulu

“I am very impressed with the initiative. There is another one in the pipeline, whereby road signs and road markings will be done through donations from the private sector. I believe we should have a modern approach to express ourselves when it comes to service delivery issues, instead of toi-toi'ing all the time."

On Monday, the youth of Bhekuzulu took the initiative to clean and unclog storm-water drains. They all went out with different cleaning equipment to try and resolve the problem that is said to have been in existence for the longest time.

Mkhuliseli Mhlongo, who is a member of the Salvation Army, was also present when the youngsters were busy with the cleaning. He commented that: “On the Bhekuzulu location taxi road to Mpofini, we struggle with water drainage problems. The system is often blocked, with a very bad smell, which damages the road. This was reported several times to our municipality, but never attended to at all. The youth decided to clean up voluntarily to avoid the road being more damaged. We requested the municipality to move the rubbish, but still no assistance. We wish to thank the volunteers who cleaned in numbers. We appreciate their commitment.”

One of the young men who was also part of the clean-up, Siyanqoba Sibiya, said, “I am very impressed with the initiative. There is another one in the pipeline, whereby road signs and road markings will be done through donations from the private sector. I believe we should have a modern approach to express ourselves when it comes to service delivery issues, instead of toi-toi’ing all the time.”

Mhlongo also mentioned that not only the location side is suffering from blocked drains, but also the town as well, and no one seems interested in getting the problem fixed. After the volunteers had cleaned out the dirt that was blocking the drains, they requested the municipality to help them remove all this dirt from the streets. Fortunately, municipal employees did come and help.
