Vryheid steals league crown from Volkrust

The half-time score was 19-3 to Vryheid and they carried on in this vein to post a final score of 45-10 when the final whistle blew.

The Volksrust rugby team stepped onto Vryheid’s turf as league winners in 2019. Then, due to Covid-19, no rugby was played for two years and thus no new winners have been crowned since.

This past Saturday was a bitterly cold one, which made it difficult for the players to perform at optimum level. Nonetheless, Vryheid stepped up to the plate and put on a spectacular, exhilarating performance against the previous league winners. Volksrust’s scrums were better in the first 15 minutes, but Vryheid’s forward pack ruled the field thereafter. After a few tactical changes, Vryheid dominated the scrums as well as the line-outs. Vryheid capitalised on their opponents’ mistakes, which saw them scoring two tries. The backs rocketed over Volksrust’s backline when they had perfect line-breaks. Coach Jaco Maritz says the players’ defence was the best he has seen this year so far.

‘Man of the Match’ was Kumbulani Koza for the forwards, while Carl Holtzhauzen and Kumbulani played exceptionally in the line-outs and in attacking moves. Carl’s defence was top-notch, especially seeing as his opposite number was rock-solid. The senior players led by example and gave the spectators a thrilling experience, even though the Currie Cup final between the Griquas and Pumas was being broadcast at the same time.

The half-time score was 19-3 to Vryheid and they carried on in this vein to post a final score of 45-10 when the final whistle blew. On the downside, the local team gave away too many penalty kicks and this is something they need to work on before the next game.
