New municipal coat-of-arms gets the thumbs-down

Residents called this a ‘waste of ratepayers money”

When the local municipality revealed via social media that they had added a pop of colour to the existing coat-of-arms, residents responded in disbelief and anger.

According to Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality, it was resolved during a council meeting on May 26 to include the colour red into the coat-of-arms.

With half of the town experiencing prolonged water disruptions, crumbling public infrastructure and potholes in almost every street, residents felt that the municipality could have focused their attention on more pressing matters of service delivery.

Residents felt that water supply – which has been intermittent and continues to hinder businesses, households and public institutions – should be a priority for the local municipality.

“Useless things come first, while we have no water to drink,” said one resident.

This sentiment was echoed by several other social media users, who agreed that the ‘new coat-of-arms’ did nothing to improve service delivery.

“Infrastructure is a mess, but all they care about is this stupid logo,” commented another resident.

Residents also lamented the cost of this ‘futile exercise’, saying that with the municipality already in financial difficulty, the coat-of-arms alteration was another waste of ratepayers’ money.
