The aftermath of the ‘oldest profession’

Paterson Street business owners are fed up at cleaning up behind the sex workers.

Businesses are fuming once again at the remnants of prostitution in the Newcastle CBD. Owners on Paterson Street have expressed outrage at continually cleaning up ash, litter and worse morning after morning.

The Newcastle Municipality however, has declined to comment on the situation. Officials instead said that Newcastle SAPS would have to answer questions from the media.

Paterson Street has been a popular ‘hang-out’ for ladies of the night for many years now.

Mary Dobbie, the Manager of the Newcastle Crisis Centre, commented, “Prostitution has been around for hundreds of years and will be for hundreds more…”

In a candid interview with the Newcastle Advertiser, one prostitute said she did not want to sit on the street corners but with four children to care for, she has no choice.
