‘Women’s month’ by Hlalalisani Shoba

August being a women’s month, it doesn’t end there but we all have a role to play, especially when it comes to the issue of GBV.

HALALISANI SHOBA

It is that time of the year when we dedicate August as women’s month in our country. I can’t run from the fact that women are indeed worthy to be classified as pillars of survival, also they play a huge role in building and sustaining families and society at large. “Igama lamakhosikazi malibongwe”. I believe that anyone who does good, needs to be celebrated each and every day not just on certain occasions.

As we celebrate women’s month, how I wish they could understand the power bestowed upon unity. Unity has the power to destroy poverty, sickness and individualism. If a woman is capable of turning a house to a warm home, surely women can turn this world to be a better place, but only if they are united. Women pretend to love one another but they don’t. I’m saying so just because I’ve seen in many instances where they have failed to support one another.

We can talk about gender inequality every day; yes, it does exist but at times I feel like women, they are playing their own role in making sure that they don’t take the leading role. Instead of supporting one another, they tend to compete in many occasions. Hopeful this women’s month will bring unity amongst women especially here in KwaZulu Natal, I believe it is not a coincidence that for the first time in the history of our province we will have a woman as a ‘Premier’.

August being a women’s month, it doesn’t end there but we all have a role to play, especially when it comes to the issue of GBV. How I wish, I can wake up tomorrow to the country that is GBV free, where media platforms will have nothing to report about the cases of GBV not because they are hiding traumatic stats but because we have won the fight against GBV.

It is our responsibility to be vocal and at all times we shouldn’t protect the perpetrators of GBV.  I am against the abuse that is directed to children and women. I am not afraid to be vocal about that. If you are reading this and you are a perpetrator of GBV than you are a disgrace. “Igama lamakhosikazi malibongwe”.
