Province sees slight drop in dam levels

This past week, KwaZulu-Natal dam levels decreased slightly from 86.5% to 86.1%, despite the South African Weather Service’s forecast of ‘disruptive’ rainfall.

Albert Falls, one of the biggest dams in the province, has dropped from 94.9% to 93.3%, and the Mearns Dam on the Mooi River has fallen from 56.0% to 54.3%.

Spioenkop, Driel Barrage, Woodstock and Zaaihoek dams still have the same percentages as last week, namely 100.2%, 100.0%, 93.0% and 90.6%, respectively.

The primary water supply system for the province, the Umgeni Water Supply System, is still above average but simultaneously witnessing a slight dip from last week’s 95.8% to 95.3% this week.

Nagle Dam on the Umgeni River, in comparison, has gone up from 84.2% to a whopping 100.5%. A brim-full Inanda Dam has also shown a slight improvement, rising from 100.9% last week to 101.1% this week.

Despite ongoing efforts to raise the dam wall, Hazelmere Dam’s 48.5% retention rate is still below the national average. The Mhlathuze Water Supply System’s Goedertrouw Dam has decreased from 98.3% to 97.8%.

The Department of Water & Sanitation has reaffirmed its dedication to successfully implementing long-term solutions with regards to the province’s water scarcity issues.

This comes after a meeting last week in Kwa-Nongoma with the Mandlakazi Tribal Authority, presided over by Minister Senzo Mchunu.
