Newcastle SPCA rescues feline stuck in barbed wire fence

The cat is now recovering at the SPCA and waiting for its owners to come looking for it.

A cat, thought to be a stray, was rescued from being caught up in a barbed wire fence thanks to the efforts of two local students and the Newcastle SPCA last week Friday (April 14).

Heather Gero of the Newcastle SPCA said two students approached the organisation and told them about a cat that appeared to be trapped in a nearby fence.

“When we arrived, the stricken cat was entangled and hanging from the fence, with barbed wire stuck in its paws and tail. Our staff acted quickly because this poor cat was clearly in pain and extremely stressed,” Gero told the Advertiser.

“The cat was wrapped in a warm towel because it was wet and cold (it had obviously been stuck here overnight) and we helped to calm it down while we cut the fencing and we were able to safely remove the cat,” she explained.

The animal was rushed to the vet as it had multiple injuries and a piece of barbed wire was still stuck in the flesh of its tail.

“Due to the extent of the injury, the veterinarian had to amputate a portion of the tail. All of the other wounds were, however, cleaned and treated.”

The cat is now recovering at the SPCA and waiting for its owners to come looking for it.

Gero is urging responsible pet owners to report any missing animals to the SPCA. This is done by filling out a lost animal form and attaching a photo of the missing pet.

“We can then contact you immediately if your lost pet is found,” she concluded.
