Soccer: Friday was a festival of soccer, with local and visiting teams making up sides. Sarel Cilliers’ first team won the tournament, kicking off the celebrations on a high note. On the girls’ side, Dundee High School came first and Dundee Secondary School second. Thanks to Sifiso Dlamini for helping compile the programme of play.
Netball, hockey and rugby:
The stalls were all set up early on Saturday, in preparation for a busy day, and delicious smells permeated the air. The rugby, netball and hockey teams arrived from far and wide, and the supporters were spoilt for choice as to what they could watch.
Every field was a brightly coloured swirl of players competing for every possible advantage, with action galore and spectators enthralled. There was a very positive atmosphere and lots of lively activity.
The netball was played with ‘Fast 5′ rules. The Sarel Cilliers U/17-A side and U/17-B side fought valiantly, but did not make the finals. In the finals, Pionier played Newcastle High, and Dundee High played Ferrum, with Ferrum and Newcastle fighting for the trophy. Well done to Newcastle High, who won. The boys’ and girls’ hockey was also very exciting to watch, with old scholars making up teams and taking on the younger players, which the spectators greatly enjoyed. The girls’ hockey was won by Ferrum, with Sarel Cilliers 1 in second and Pionier third. The Sarel Cilliers Boys’ Hockey 1 won the hockey tournament.
The rugby was Super 7s, with teams of 12, but only seven at a time allowed on the field, playing seven minutes a side. It was fast and furious action, and great to watch. The Vryheid Landbou U/15 side defeated Volkrust 2 for the Shield, Volksrust 1 defeated Newcastle High for the Bowl, Sarel Cilliers defeated Ferrum for the Plate, and Pionier defeated Vryheid for the Cup. In the U/18 Super 7s, Volksrust 2 defeated Estcourt for the Shield, Vryheid Landbou defeated Sebenza for the Bowl, Ferrum 2 defeated Ferrum 1 for the Plate, and Sarel Cilliers U/17 defeated Volksrust 1 for the Cup. Well done to Sarel Cilliers U/17 for winning the tournament.
All the players received generously large boxes of juice from sponsors Orange Grove. Thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of the weekend.
