RIP, Skype – the end of an era

The video-calling platform will shut down in May

According to Microsoft, the reason for shutting down Skype is the simple fact that the way we communicate has evolved significantly over the years. From instant messaging to video calls, technology has continuously transformed how we connect with each other.

In order to streamline their free consumer communications offerings, so they can more easily adapt to customer needs, they will be retiring Skype in May this year to focus on Microsoft Teams (free) – their modern communications and collaboration hub.

Since 2003, Skype was the way users were first introduced to video calling. Initially hampered by poor quality video and audio, it was still the platform that truly brought mainstream communication to mobile phones and computers. Long before WhatsApp and Zoom became a thing!

Considering that Microsoft paid over R50 billion for the platform in 2011 and then proceeded to slowly murder it by actively developing what they claim is its natural replacement, Microsoft Teams should come as no surprise. Basically, Skype’s time has come!

Microsoft are offering all Skype users a seamless transfer to Teams by simply logging into Teams with their current Skype login details.

Time will tell whether Microsoft’s consolidation of Skype into Teams actually pays off.
