In commemoration of Freedom Day, Ncome Museum recently hosted an informative session to encourage reflection on the true meaning of freedom in South Africa.
Bheki Mchunu, Deputy Director at Umsunduzi and Ncome Museums, addressed attendees and emphasised the importance of pausing to reflect on the holiday’s (April 27) deeper significance.
“We always take it upon ourselves to celebrate national holidays, and Freedom Day is one where we gather to reflect on what it really means,” Mchunu said. “We go down memory lane and ask ourselves: what does freedom look like, and what does it mean to each individual?”
As part of the event, a documentary titled The Luthuli Detachment was screened which chronicles the loss and eventual regaining of freedom, highlighting the sacrifices of struggle heroes who fought for liberation. A discussion followed the screening, during which participants expressed varying views on the state of freedom today.
While some noted visible progress through improved access to education, healthcare, transport, and religious freedom, others felt that true freedom remains a work in progress.
Mchunu concluded the session by stressing the need for continued awareness and education. “Some people still don’t believe they have rights to certain things. It’s vital that we raise awareness so people understand their history, rights, and responsibilities,” he said.
