Business people in the industrial area have raised concerns about water that has been leaking since 2023. Different businessmen say they have reported the leak several times to the municipality, but nothing is ever done about it. The business owners once took it upon themselves to fix the leak, only to realize that they could not fix it, so they called for help again. One woman who works in one of the businesses in the industrial area contacted the Vryheid Herald and explained that, “This water issue has been going on for years now and nothing seems to be done about it. I will not say we are really affected that much by the leak, but we are really concerned about the amount of water that has been wasted for years now. Our little town has water shortages now and again, yet we have running water that is being wasted. We have endless reference numbers we received from the municipality, as we have been reporting this leak, but no one has showed up to fix the issue.”
Councillor Elaine Rodway was contacted and she explained how poor service delivery can impact upon businesses, as they do not have room to create employment. “Businesses cannot employ people if they are spending all their profits on paying for basic services that are not being supplied reliably and then having to pay more to buy and run generators and buy water so they can operate. When town is neglected and deprived of basic services, everyone suffers. Employment is so desperately needed, but poor service delivery has a major impact on business.” She has taken it upon herself to assist with this issue and help the people in the industrial area.
