The Newcastle SPCA has called for the public to remain vigilantand on the look-out after a lion was reportedly spotted near Ingogo earlier this afternoon (Wednesday, September 10).
This comes after a local farmer alleged that the video footage is ‘old and fake.’
“We have received a call suggesting that the report about a lion sighting may be false,” a SPCA spokesperson said.
“All cases reported to the SPCA are taken extremely seriously. We have followed the correct procedures, and KZN Wildlife has been informed. This case will be investigated thoroughly by KZN Wildlife for the safety of both the animal and the public.
“Should the report prove to be false, the necessary procedures will be followed.
A significant amount of time, effort, and resources go into responding to calls like this from all involved parties. However, if the report is genuine, inaction could result in unnecessary harm to the animal or even the loss of human life.
“We urge the community to remain vigilant, stay safe, and immediately report any confirmed sightings of this animal.”
Residents are urged not to approach, trap, chase, or harm the animal.
Instead, they should immediately report its location by sending a WhatsApp location pin to the SPCA’s emergency number: 072 337 0347.
