AbaQulusi mayor reduces daily load-reduction hours after protests

AbaQulusi mayor reduces load-reduction hours, pledges review after three months.

AbaQulusi Local Municipality Mayor Sifiso Mkwanazi has announced changes to the municipality’s load-reduction schedule following mounting frustration from residents in several communities.
Mkwanazi recently visited Hlobane, Cliffdale, Vaalbank and Mondlo to address the residents. While some communities engaged with him, Mondlo residents refused to listen.

Speaking later during a live broadcast on the municipality’s official Facebook page, Mkwanazi acknowledged the growing anger. “We have heard the cries in different communities regarding load-reduction hours. We are not implementing this just because we want to, but because of the debt we owe Eskom,” he said.
After a council meeting, it was resolved that the load-reduction periods would be shortened from four hours to two. The new schedule will see electricity being cut from 04:00 to 06:00, and again from 16:00 to 18:00.

“As the municipality, we are not expecting these communities to be happy and clap for us, but we are appealing for them to be patient and work with us. In three months’ time, we will re-evaluate the implementation of load-reduction. We are working tirelessly to find alternative ways to deal with our electricity challenges,” he added.
