Top science learners shine at inter-district Olympiad

Learners from six districts competed in a science Olympiad to boost academic excellence.

High-flying learners in six districts – namely Mkhanyakude, Zululand, Uthukela, Mzinyathi, Amajuba and King Cetshwayo – took part in a three-day Physical Science Olympiad at Vryheid Comprehensive Secondary School. The second annual Inter-District Physical Science Olympiad saw 364 Grade 12 learners writing their Physical Science paper 1 on Friday and their Chemistry paper on Saturday. On Sunday, the learners were rewarded for their excellence.
The main purpose of the event is to increase the number of Bachelor passes in Physical Science by Grade 12 learners in their final exams.

Deputy Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation Nomalungelo Gina graced the event with her presence. She thanked all the organisers of the revision programme, saying, “Every child who is in this programme is a winner and I thank them for choosing the science stream, which is very important. I am aware that being in this stream is not easy, but the learners chose it against all odds and that makes me proud. When one chooses science, one needs good connections and company; scientists need one another all the time. Let us put science at the centre of everything we do to get concrete solutions for the country we live in.”

Different organisations supported the programme by doing presentations and experiments, as well as donating items such as calculators, stationery, laptops and cash prizes.
This programme was organised by Northern Natal subject advisors, in partnership with the Department of Education.
