N3 re-opened after trucker protest causes total closure

Truckers were protesting the introduction of AARTO.

The multiple vehicle obstruction caused by trucks taking part in a protest action between Estcourt Shell Ultra City and the Bergville Toll Plaza in KwaZulu-Natal since midnight has been cleared.

All the vehicles that were blocking the north- and southbound lanes have been removed this morning (November 27) and vehicles are once again moving.

Congestion and delays will, however, continue to be experienced in the area while the traffic backlog clears. Road-users are advised to reduce speed and proceed with caution, confirmed N3TC in a media statement.

ATDF-ASA, a trucking organisation, is believed to be behind the shutdown of the N3. According to a press release that has been circulating, they are protesting the proposed introduction of AARTO, which they claim will only affect South African drivers and not drivers from neighbouring states..

N3TC extended its appreciation to all road-users for their patience and understanding, and all members of the Road Incident Management System (RIMS) who assisted with the recovery operation throughout the night.
