Veteran Swimmer Dedicates Midmar Miles to Cancer Fight
Pelser completes emotional charity swim honouring father at Midmar Mile.
53-year-old Beverley Pelser once again pushed her limits by taking part in her 45th Midmar Mile over a span of 29 years at the world’s largest open-water swimming event, the Midmar Mile, which attracts thousands of swimmers of all ages and abilities.
Swimming in Honour of Her Father
Pelser completed the eight-mile charity swim for cancer, along with the individual one-mile event, on February 5 and 6. She said this year’s participation carried deep personal meaning. “This year was very special to me as I did my first ever eight miles in honour of my dad, who passed away at the age of 53 after having cancer. This is the 53rd Midmar Mile, I am 53 years old, and my dad was 53 when he passed on, so it was very sentimental for me. I also took part in the eight miles to honour and show love to close people I know — friends and relatives living with cancer,” she said.
Passion Pushes Her to the Finish
Pelser said weather conditions were favourable, although limited training made the swim more demanding. “I never had much training because of Vryheid’s weather, so I was challenged a bit. But I have a big love for swimming — it is my passion — so I pushed myself and finished in a time of 6 hours and 42 minutes. Internally I feel good and I am very proud of myself. I achieved the goal I set, even though I was exhausted at the end,” she said smiling.
Encouraging Others to Swim for a Cause
She added that she hopes to take part in more charity swims in future and encouraged others to get involved in meaningful causes. “If you want to do it, just do it. It is all in the mind — set your mind right and do not give up.”
