Sentraal storm through to finals after downing Highlanders

Sentraal are through to the finals of the Northern KZN League, following a 19-7 victory over old rivals Highlanders of Newcastle on Saturday.

While the home team stormed ahead in the first half, scoring tries through Jan-Frederick van Zyl (who dotted down twice) and Renier van Rooyen, Sentraal found the Highlanders to be a tougher proposition in the second half. Highlanders scored a converted try in the second half, but could not break through Sentraal’s disciplined lines after that.

Deon Kriel of Sentraal said the win sets up a home final at the Dundee High grounds on August 5 against Piet Retief – watch the Courier for details. Deon thanked all the supporters for again turning up in numbers to support Sentraal.

He urges the fans to back the team in the final as well. Sentraal’s second team clashed with the Bears’ second team in an epic game that ended up as a 30-25 defeat; but Deon is hopeful that following a re-tallying of the score, this will be adjusted to a 30-30 draw.

The game had supporters of both teams screaming themselves hoarse as Sentraal set up camp on the visitors’ try line in the dying minutes of the game.
