One of the oldest homes in Dundee goes up in flames

The house dates back to Peter Smith's time who was one of the founders of Dundee, according to those who live in the area.

A fierce house fire on Friis Street has gutted one of the oldest homes in Dundee.

The fire that broke out before 1pm spread quickly from the roof.

Neighbours assisted the homeowner in removing vehicles from the property.

The fire brigade arrived and battled bravely against at first low pressure, which did improve, and several holes in the hoses.

However, Phumlani Ntombela, Endumeni Disaster, did say the fire personnel were handling the situation well despite one of the fire engines being in for repairs.

He did add that the municipality will be seeking a backup fire engine from the district and that the surrounding trees will be doused to ensure the flames do not flare up.

A granny flat and lapha area were also saved. First reports said the fire was caused by an electrical fault in the roof but this still has to be confirmed.

Neighbours and SAPS members assist to push vehicles out of the property.

Flames race through the roof.
