Umzinyathi SAPS concerned about thieves pouncing on stokvel groups

The Umzinyathi SAPS have launched multi-disciplinary approach to preempt crime this festive season.

With a month to go until Christmas Day, Umzinyathi District SAPS has warned the public about a rise in Stokvel-related robberies and scams.

During this time, individuals and groups often withdraw large amounts of money for Stokvel payouts, making them targets for criminals.

A stokvel is an informal savings pool or syndicate in which funds are contributed in rotation, allowing participants lump sums payouts especially at Christmas.

“To help prevent stokvel robberies, we advise you to avoid withdrawing large sums in cash, If possible, transfer funds electronically. This reduces the need to carry large amounts of cash, ” said SAPS spokesperson, Cst Siyabonga Nkwanyana.

“Withdraw money in groups. If cash withdrawals are unavoidable, go with trusted group members to a secure location and ensure you’re discreet about the transaction. Stay alert in public spaces. Criminals often monitor ATMs and banks, especially during this period. Be cautious of strangers who may try to befriend you or offer assistance. Use banking facilities wisely. Opt for bank transfers or consult your bank about safer payout methods.”

Turning to stock theft, Nkwanyana said the festive season also brings a noticeable increase in stock theft cases, as criminals exploit busy periods when livestock is left unattended.

“To safeguard your livestock, SAPS Umzinyathi District advises farmers and livestock owners to check livestock regularly. Ensure animals are secured and conduct routine headcounts to detect any missing animals early. Mark your livestock, ear tags, branding, or other identification methods help deter thieves and facilitate recovery if livestock is stolen. Keep fences in good condition. Well-maintained fences are an effective deterrent, making it harder for thieves to access or transport stolen animals. Report suspicious behaviour immediately, and contact your nearest SAPS station if you notice any unusual activity around your property.

“Our priority is the safety of our communities. Let’s work together to ensure a secure festive season for all.”
