Umzinyathi district launches new group to tackle GBV

The launch coincides with the start this week of the 16 Day of Activism Against gender-based violence which is a worldwide movement.

The Umzinyathi District Technical Working Group for Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) was officially launched on November 14 at Battlefields Lodge. The launch was led by the Office of the Premier and attended by various stakeholders, including the Umzinyathi District Commissioner, Major General Francis Slambert, who was appointed as the chairperson of this crucial initiative.

Representing SAPS, Major General Slambert was joined by members of the Umzinyathi District Women’s Network, Men for Change, and commanders from Greytown and Dundee FCS units, who provided insights into handling different GBV-related cases. Major General Slambert committed to working closely with sister departments to ensure the effectiveness of the working group, aligning with her role as the SAPS KZN Women’s Network Champion to combat GBV in both Umzinyathi and the greater KZN region.

The technical working group includes representatives from key departments such as Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs, Justice, Education, Community Safety and Liaison, Social Development, and Health. Stakeholders in attendance included the Umzinyathi District Municipality, Msinga, Umvoti, and Nquthu local municipalities, civil society groups, and the District Mayor. This collaborative effort aims to implement proactive strategies to reduce GBV in the district and support affected communities,” said SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Siyabonga Nkwanyana.
