Dundee’s Jenny hangs up her cap after 40 years of teaching youngsters how to swim

Jenny's swimming school was an institution most children went through in Dundee.

Many adults are today grateful for the swimming skills they learnt while being put through their paces in the pool at Jenny Thöle’s Tatham Street home.
It’s thanks to these life skills learnt in the water that fear and uncertainties were overcome, which quite possibly led to many lives being saved.
After 40 years of teaching children to swim, Thöle has finally hung up her swimming cap.

A teacher by profession, Jenny taught at Dundee Senior Primary School in the Grade 2 class from 1978 to 1983.
In 1985, she started attending numerous swimming instructor courses, which led to her teaching children as young as three how to swim.

She has a passion for young children and enjoys teaching them the basics of different styles of swimming and safety measures in the pool. She started her classes with children whom she taught at Dundee Senior Primary School with four sessions a day, eight hours per day.

Thöle is also no slouch in the water, having completed one Midmar Challenge and two Chelmsford Dam marathons. To keep fit, she and her husband Waldo cycle and she also enjoys playing bridge – both are active in the Dundee Rotary Club.
“Of course, I will miss the kids. I cannot even calculate how many came through this pool over 40 years! But thank you so much to all those who supported me – it was wonderful to teach kids a life skill.”
