Dundee residents weigh-in on town’s ‘dirty look’

Once famed for its cleanliness, Dundee resident have lamented the town's demise 'into looking like a pig sty'.

Uncollected refuse, coupled with dogs and so-called ‘paras’ targeting rubbish bags, has left much of Dundee’s central business area looking like a ‘pigsty’, residents have complained to the Courier.

Residents in Colley and Gladstone Street, Union Street and other areas have complained that the uncollected bags have been ripped open and the contents strewn over pavements and in the street.

“This is so embarrassing when we have visitors here from the holiday period. They always commented on how clean Dundee always was but to see it like this is very sad,” said one long-time resident.

Some of the ripped open bags were left outside several accommodation establishments which added to the mounting displeasure.

Responding to the complaints on social media, Cllr Naresh Gopie said he was aware of the current backlog caused by the holiday period but assured residents that the refuse trucks were operational and bags were being picked up.

“At businesses where a lot of refuse is generated, we recommend that a municipal skip is hired to ensure that the bags are not left out in the open that encourages scavenging,” he said.

Peacevale residents have meanwhile complained of people dumping domestic and other refuse in vacant plots. Cllr Gopie said residents should report offenders to the authorities.
