The Endumeni Municipality has issued a warning to local business owners about a scam involving a fraudster posing as a municipal official. The individual, who identifies himself as “Robert,” has been contacting unsuspecting customers, particularly business owners, and threatening to disconnect their electricity unless immediate payment is made to an Absa Bank account.
“It is important to note that this scammer is not affiliated with the Endumeni Municipality in any way. The municipality does not use the bank account in question, and no municipal official should be asking for payments through this channel. Some residents have unfortunately fallen victim to this scam, and the municipality strongly advises against making any payments to individuals claiming to represent the municipality, especially when such demands are made outside of official channels,” the municipality said in a statement.
One business owner has already been duped into paying R5000 into the account for fear of being cut off.
A case has been filed with local law enforcement, and the municipality is working closely with the authorities to track down the fraudster. “We encourage everyone to be cautious and ensure any municipal transactions are conducted through the official payment methods outlined by the municipality.
“For further clarification or to report suspicious activity, please contact the Endumeni Municipality’s Customer Services Department directly.”
