Top cop takes charge: Dundee SAPS’s new commander
Hopes are high that a breath of fresh air will bring more positivity to the SAPS.
Colonel Theo du Plessis is fully aware of the monumental task that lies ahead as he steps into the Station Commander’s role at the Dundee police station. With an impressive 38 years of experience in law enforcement, Col du Plessis brings a wealth of knowledge and management expertise that will guide him in reshaping perceptions of the Dundee SAPS.
Born in Pietermaritzburg, Col du Plessis, fondly known as ‘Dupie,’ had long harboured the dream of becoming a police officer. After matriculating from Vryheid High School, he enrolled in the police college in 1986. His career journey began at the Hlobane police station, marking the start of a dedicated career that would see him rise through the ranks.
In 1997, Col du Plessis took on a leadership role as a captain at the Ulundi detective branch, where he served as the commander for many years.
His career trajectory continued upward, and in 2003, he moved into management services before being transferred in 2006 to the Ulundi Management Information Centre, a key role in overseeing crime statistics. After four years in Ulundi, he was transferred to Vryheid as the detective coordinator.
In 2016, Col du Plessis joined the Serious and Violent Crime Unit, where he led investigations into numerous high-profile crimes across the province. Throughout his career as a detective, he secured an impressive 34 life convictions.
“This is my first posting as a Station Commander. It is an exciting, challenging job, and one I am looking forward to. My goal is to ensure that all our members serve the public of Dundee with excellence,” Col du Plessis said. “There are many obstacles to overcome, but with time, dedication, and the continued support of the public—which we truly appreciate—we will meet these challenges head-on. I am confident in my new management team, and together, we are committed to making Dundee a much safer place for everyone.”
