Water Crisis Committee to march on Dundee’s Princess Magogo building

Endumeni residents have for years had to endure water shedding while some areas have not had water for months.

In response to ongoing water shortages, the Water Crisis Committee, in collaboration with three Councillors whose wards are most affected, will march on the Princess Magogo building on February 14.
The building is the headquarters of the Umzinyathi District Municipality which is responsible for the supply of water to Endumeni.
For years, the area has been plagued by water outages compounded by poor infrastructure and supply outstripping what the ageing Biggarsberg Water Treatment Plant can produce.

The march has the backing of the Endumeni Residents and Civic Association.
Previous meetings with Umzinyathi were held to ventilate the water crisis but up until now, there has been no relief.
Some areas in Sibongile have not had water in their taps for ‘years’, according to activist Mzwakhe Sithebe while other areas face water shedding in a bid by Umzinyathi to save reserves.

“This demonstration aims to highlight the urgent need for improved water supply and to address the ongoing challenges faced by local communities. All are encouraged to join in and support this vital cause.”

Glencoe and Wasbank also experience extended outages with the Glencoe reservoir having to feed both the entire Glencoe area and Wasbank.
The Wasbank reservoir is leaking and repairs are to be done which will bring some relief to hard-pressed residents.
Plans are in place to upgrade the pump station at Tayside on the Buffalo River, from where Endumeni’s raw water is pumped by uThukela Water.
Only one pump – out of three (one of which is a backup pump) – is working and fears are that if that pump fails, Endumeni will be without water for days.
Tenders have been called for and hopes are that the upgrade will start within weeks.
